This webinar will provide an in-depth critical overview of the DSM-5 changes to depressive disorders and the controversies they triggered. Depressive disorders have been recognized since ancient times and are today the most common category of disorders confronted by clinicians. Due to associated disability, potential for life-threatening suicidality, and availability of effective treatments, accurate diagnosis is crucial. The DSM-5 has introduced extensive changes to the diagnosis of depressive disorders in an attempt to improve the validity and utility of diagnosis, making this one of the most substantially revised categories of disorder in the Manual. The changes include new categories of disorder as well as changes to criteria for existing disorders. In some cases, these changes are highly controversial, with some disputes erupting into the popular press concerning whether the changes pathologize normal human emotions. This webinar is aimed at those familiar with DSM-IV diagnosis who want to understand and master what is new in DSM-5. The review will also include coverage of DSM-5 changes regarding pathologies of grief.
