Leaders Sought

Nominations for the association's spring 2008 election must reach the National Committee on Nominations and Leadership Identification by Oct. 31, 2007.

The committee will meet Nov. 30-Dec 1, 2007, to develop the slate of candidates.

Positions to be filled include:

Board of Directors: Member-at-large (2008-11); MSW student (2008-10); regional representatives (2008-11) — Regions I, II, X, XIII.

National Committee on Nominations and Leadership Identification (2008-11): Regions I, III, V, IX.

In recommending nominees, members should bear in mind the following NASW bylaws:

The slate must reflect the ethnic minority distribution, gender distribution, sexual orientation distribution, geographic distribution, students, and special interests of membership. (To further implement 1996 bylaws amendments, members' self-identification of sexual orientation is invited on the nomination form.)

At least one board member must be a person whose current, most advanced degree is the baccalaureate.

The candidate for a nominations committee seat who garners the second-highest vote total in an electoral region will be the alternate to the elected committee member.

Current board members whose terms expire next June may be elected to other board positions, but may not succeed themselves in their current positions and may not be elected to a third consecutive board term in any capacity.

Only persons whose names are submitted to the nominations committee by Oct. 31, but are not included in the slate, may be included by petition on the final ballot.

Member Survey

The NASW Center for Workforce Studies is conducting an online membership survey to describe social work labor force activities, with a particular look at factors that influence decisions to join and leave the profession. The survey will be available to members for a limited time. To participate, please go to socialworkers.org and login using your membership number and password. Survey responses are anonymous and will be reported in the aggregate only. All members are encouraged to participate.

Caseloads

NASW and the Case Management Society of America seek comments on a draft list of factors affecting caseloads in health and behavioral health care. Comments will be used to develop a caseload matrix to determine appropriate caseloads. Please visit CMSA or the NASW Press Release by Sept. 17, 2007.

Veterans Suicide-Prevention Hotline Open

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced a national suicide-prevention hotline for veterans — (800) 273-TALK (8255). The toll-free hotline number will be staffed by mental health professionals who will take calls from across the country and work with local providers to help veterans. The VA is operating the hotline in partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
