Correction

A November story on NASW's "Help Starts Here" postage stamps incorrectly stated that the stamps are "authorized" by the U.S. Postal Service. As the story said, the NASW stamp was produced via Stamps.com Inc., a Postal Service-approved provider of postage stamps known as PhotoStamps™. The story should have stated that "PhotoStamps are licensed and approved" by the Postal Service.

2007 NASW Election Slate

As this News went to press, NASW's National Committee on Nominations and Leadership Identification was meeting to develop the slate of candidates for the association's 2007 election. The slate will be posted in January at the Governance page and will be published in the February News. Persons considered for the slate, but not nominated, may be added by petition. Petitions are due at the NASW national office by Feb. 9, 2007. Rules for submission are in NASW Bylaws Article VIII.B.2.e.

Apply for the National Provider Identifier

Clinical social workers who are private practitioners, meet the "health care provider" definition under HIPAA, transmit health information electronically or use business associations to transmit information electronically must obtain National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers by May 2007 in order to be reimbursed by third-party payers and to be compliant with HIPAA regulations. Taxes and Membership Dues Deductibility

Members who qualify to deduct membership dues from income taxes should note the following: For tax year 2006, 6.96 percent of the annual NASW dues payment is not deductible. The percentage is based on the amount of association lobbying activity in 2006. For tax planning purposes, the nondeductible portion of the NASW dues payment to be made in tax year 2007 is 7.67 percent.

Social workers who provided services to clients with certain managed care organizations, including Humana, Inc. (and many other health plans), may be eligible to receive proceeds from a $3.5 million class-action litigation settlement. Claims for compensation under the settlement must be filed by Jan. 13, 2007.
