Apply for the National Provider Identifier

Clinical social workers who are private practitioners, meet the "health care provider" definition under HIPAA, transmit health information electronically or use business associations to transmit information electronically must obtain National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers by May 2007 in order to be reimbursed by third-party payers and to be compliant with HIPAA regulations. Many payers are requesting that providers obtain NPIs up to six months earlier. To apply: click here

Labor Database Survey Under Way

Surveyors in September began contacting more than 400 holders of NASW's case management, health care and gerontology credentials to request their participation in a task survey aimed at updating the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Information Network O*NET website regarding health social work. O*NET is a national online database used by millions of employers and others. NASW encourages those contacted to participate.

HIPAA Security Rule Primer Offered

"The HIPAA Security Rule Primer: A Guide for Mental Health Practitioners" is available free from NASW's Legal Defense Fund. The guide examines HIPAA, the security rule, how the rule will affect your practice, compliance documentation, and government enforcement and penalties, among other topics. Government Relations Report Online

NASW's Office of Government Relations and Political Action has released its second quarterly report for 2006, detailing the office's work from April through June. The report covers many legislative issues of concern to the association and its members. Topics include aging, the federal budget, children and families, civil rights, health, loan forgiveness and mental health.
