Tax Deductibility

Members who qualify to deduct membership dues payments from income taxes should note the following:

For tax year 2003, 10.68 percent of the annual NASW dues payment is not deductible. The percentage is based on the amount of association lobbying activity in 2003.

For tax planning purposes, the nondeductible portion of the NASW dues payment to be made in tax year 2004 is 11.74 percent

Presidential Preferences

NASW's Political Action for Candidate Election (PACE) has posted profiles of the Democratic Party candidates for president on NASW's Web site. No profile of President George W. Bush is posted, because he is unopposed for the Republican Party nomination. PACE encourages members to let their chapters know their preference for president by Feb. 25, 2004.

Foundation Awards

The NASW Foundation is accepting applications through March 15, 2004, for its 2004-2005 fellowships, scholarships and research awards.

The Jane B. Aron Doctoral Fellowship provides partial support to social work doctoral candidates engaged in dissertation research in health care policy and practice. One $2,000 fellowship will be awarded.

The Consuelo W. Gosnell Memorial MSW Scholarships are awarded to master's degree candidates in social work interested in working with, or who have a special affinity with, American Indian/Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino populations or in public and voluntary nonprofit agency settings. Up to 10 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 will be awarded.

The Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial MSW Scholarship is awarded to a master's degree candidate in social work who demonstrates an interest in or has experience with health/mental health practice and has a commitment to working in the African American community. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.

The Ruth Fizdale Award is given to an NASW chapter engaged in a research project that links practice and policy issues with relevant social issues. One $1,500 grant will be awarded.
