A February story on NASW's gerontology initiative incorrectly attributed the 2001 report "A Blueprint for the New Millennium." The report was produced by Strengthening Aging and Gerontology Education for Social Work, a project of the Council on Social Work Education funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York.

A February story on a child welfare message to governors from NASW and the Child Welfare League of America misspelled the name of Shay Bilchik, CWLA's president and chief executive officer.

Amendment to NASW Election Slate

A candidate has been added by petition to the slate for NASW's spring 2003 election. The slate for the affected category is now as follows:

Board of Directors, Region VIII (2003-06)

Jacqueline Steingold, Mich.
Carolyn Stubbs, Mich.

Ballots will be mailed in April to NASW members in good standing as of Feb 28. Completed ballots must be received by May 19. Candidates' biographical and platform information will accompany the ballots and will be posted at NASW's Web site.

On 'State of the Union'

NASW developed and posted to its Web site in February a response to President Bush's Jan. 28 State of the Union address.

The association supports many of the sentiments in the address but takes issue with four of the president's recommendations: on the potential war with Iraq, Medicare reform, faith-based human services, and the economic stimulus.

Nominees Sought for 2003 National Awards

NASW is accepting nominations for its 2003 national awards. The awards honor social workers and other individuals who have, through their work or advocacy, advanced the principles and vision of the profession.

Awards, and those who may submit nominations for them, are
Social Worker of the Year — NASW Chapters only
Public Citizen of the Year — NASW Chapters, individuals and social welfare organizations
Public Elected Official — NASW chapters and members, individuals, and social welfare organizations
Lifetime Achievement Award — NASW Chapters and individuals

The NASW Foundation is accepting nominations for the International Rhoda G. Sarnat Award and the Knee/Wittman Health and Mental Health Achievement Awards. The Sarnat Award is given to an individual, group or organization that has significantly advanced the public image of professional social work. The award recipient receives a cash prize of $3,000. The Knee/Wittman Awards are given to individuals and groups for outstanding contributions in the field of health and mental health. NASW chapters, individuals and social welfare organizations may nominate candidates for these awards.
