NASW Responds to Hurricane Katrina
Member Services

Credentials
The $10 fee for replacing lost credential certificates will be waived. Please contact Connie Spoon in the NASW Credentialing Center at 202-336-8293 or conniespoon@naswdc.org if you need assistance.

Liability Insurance
The NASW Insurance Trust wants to ensure that members in the affected states will maintain their Professional Liability Coverage, even if they cannot renew in a timely fashion. The American Professional Agency (APA) will establish an endorsement on individual policies to prevent them from lapsing. However, it is still important for NASW members to contact APA directly for specific information about their policies. The American Professional Agency can be reached toll-free at 1-800-421-6694.

Members leaving the affected states for temporary or permanent residence in another state will need to conform to the new state's requirements regarding licensing in order for their insurance coverage to remain in effect. Members who seek to volunteer in the affected states should verify their coverage with APA.

For retired members that are volunteering in the affected states, APA will provide professional liability insurance if members receive the tail coverage from their previous policy and additionally purchase a new one going forward. An application must be completed before coverage is issued.

MBNA
NASW's credit card partner, MBNA America, is helping to bring peace of mind to those affected by Hurricane Katrina. By expanding their level of support for customers impacted by Hurricane Katrina, they are extending payment holidays on all accounts for two months and waiving late fees at all stages of delinquency for customers in the affected areas. NASW is pleased to provide this information to NASW MBNA credit card holders. Please contact MBNA directly at 1-800-421-2110 for more information

Member Dues
NASW memberships of social workers in the affected areas, especially those who have been displaced, may be extended up to six months as needed. Future renewal mailings to members in the affected areas will include this information.

State Licensure
Social workers that take new jobs in Louisiana must be credentialed by the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners within 120 days of accepting employment. To find out more, please visit www.labswe.org.
