Government Resources
Google
Google, the online search engine, has a great feature to help evacuees locate loved ones. Google has consolidated information from several publicly available databases (including that of the Red Cross) to build one comprehensive list of people affected by Hurricane Katrina in order to make it easier for evacuees, families and friends to find their loved ones. Google states that it cannot guarantee the completeness or accuracy of this information, but it has tried to include as much data as possible. SAMHSA
SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) established a toll-free hotline for people in crisis in the aftermath of the Katrina disaster. By calling 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255), callers will be connected to a network of local crisis counseling centers across the country. Callers to the hotline will receive counseling from trained staff who will listen to and assist callers in getting the mental health help they need. The hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

HHS
has developed a comprehensive Web site with a range of links relating
to hurricane relief efforts. The agency has also created a toll-free
number and Web site for the deployment of health care professionals.
That number is 1-866-KAT-MEDI and the Web site URL is https://volunteer.ccrf.hhs.gov
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/Center for Medicare and Medicaid

CMS
has relaxed many of its programs' normal operating procedures to speed
the provision of health care services to those in need. Many beneficiaries
have been evacuated to neighboring states where receiving hospitals
and nursing homes have no health care records, information on current
health status, or even verification of the person's status as a Medicare
or Medicaid beneficiary. CMS is also advising providers to follow special
emergency procedures. See the Web site for details.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
DHS has activated the National Emergency Resource Registry web site to accept the generous offers to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina. If your organization, agency or corporation has resources to donate or sell to the response organizations, please register those items in the National Emergency Resource Registry at: https://www.swern.gov/
