NASW Foundation-911 Fund
The 911 Fund: Social Workers’ Response was
established just days after the September 11, 2001 tragedy in New
York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. Since the fund was created, it
has supported programs in New York City and Washington, D.C.
In October 2001, a grant was awarded to the NASW
New York City Chapter to help underwrite the costs of “From Trauma to Recovery: A
Meeting of the Social Work Community.” Over six hundred professionals
attended this meeting, which was designed to assist them to prepare
for the recovery work ahead.
In April 2002, the NASW Foundation, in partnership
with the Cosmos Club and the Center for Mental Health Services
(under the Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMHSA), co-sponsored
a full-day workshop “Looking Back, Looking Forward: Strategies
for Coping with Disasters.” The workshop brought together educators
and counselors to address the problems both children and educators
face as a result of September 11 and to examine coping methods designed
to deal with the aftereffects of disasters. The workshop began with
a panel comprised of representatives from two elementary schools
and one middle school in D.C. that lost teachers and family members
of students in the attack on the Pentagon.
