Evelyn Tomaszewski Has Managed the Spectrum HIV/AIDS Program for 13 Years

WASHINGTON DC—The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is pleased to announce that NASW Senior Policy Advisor Evelyn Tomaszewski, MSW, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Forum on Global Violence Prevention with the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

The Forum seeks to illuminate the complex topic of violence prevention and will facilitate dialogues that explore cross-cultural issues pertinent to seven categories: child abuse, elder abuse, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, youth violence, collective violence, and self-directed violence.  The primary geographic focus will be on low and middle income countries.

"We extend hearty congratulations to Ms. Tomaszewski on her appointment to this important Institute Of Medicine Forum, says Luisa Lopez, Director of the Human Rights and International Affairs Division at NASW. “Global violence is one of society’s most complex problems, and we’re very pleased that IOM recognizes the critical role social workers continue to play in efforts to help clients and systems address violence at the individual, community, and systemic level."

The Forum on Global Violence Prevention will:

  1. Provide a regular, evidence-based, impartial, scientific setting for the multidisciplinary exchange of information and ideas;
  2. Illuminate policy, research, and practice priorities worthy of further study or investment; and
  3. Gather information on the scientific basis and public health needs pertinent to global violence prevention.

To achieve its objectives, the Forum will conduct structured discussions, workshops, and symposia, and will publish workshop summaries.  Specific issues and agenda topics are determined by the Forum membership, and span a broad range of issues.
