Social Work Student Laura Granruth Receives Eileen Blackey Doctoral Fellowship

NASW Foundation presents award to the Catholic University of America student

Washington—The National Association of Social Workers Foundation is pleased to announce that Laura Granruth is the recipient of the Eileen Blackey Doctoral Fellowship for 2008-2009.  This Fellowship Program provides partial support to social work doctoral students who are engaged in dissertation research in welfare policy and practice.

Housing and public safety issues have increasingly become the responsibility of state government over the past 25 years.  Granruth’s research will examine the extent to which the level of a state’s tax code progressivity has an impact on children’s quality of life in that state.  The quality of life indicators that will be examined are education, health and economic measures.

Ms. Granruth hopes that the knowledge gained from her research will give social workers much needed insight into how a state’s tax policy can impact a child’s well-being, as this aspect of child welfare has not been studied to date. Additionally, the results of Ms. Granruth’s study could lend support to social justice advocates if progressive taxation is found to be economically sound.
