LEGISLATIVE AND LEGAL ADVOCACY

Who is at Risk for Slipping Through Society’s Safety Net?

Nearly one million children who are victims of child abuse and neglect each year…thousands of soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder…more than 50 million people caring for a chronically ill, disabled, or aging family member…one in four adults with a diagnosable mental disorder… you and your colleagues who face on-the-job safety issues, significant educational debt, and insufficient salaries.

We all are at risk if our profession is not supported on Capitol Hill. Tell your members of Congress to sign on to the Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act (H.R. 795 and S. 686) to ensure our ability to provide essential services and necessary care across the lifespan.

Upcoming July NASW NEWS

Look for these articles in the upcoming July issue, available soon at NASW NEWS online.

Encyclopedia of Social Work From the Director: Social Workers Must Be at the Table
By Elizabeth J. Clark
As we adjust to a new administration on Capitol Hill, we also need to learn new vocabulary. One new term–Comparative Effectiveness Research–will have particular relevance for the practice of social work and all of us must help form the questions and topics to be researched.

States Make Progress in Promoting Safety
Violence against social workers has made national headlines. NASW chapters are continuing to play a major role in advocating for safety provisions in the private and public workforce. With the hard work of chapters, recent successes have taken place in West Virginia, Massachusetts, and other states.

Sebelius Named Secretary of HHS
NASW supported the nomination and confirmation of former Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as the secretary of the U.S. Department of Human Services. NASW’s Kansas Chapter President Greg Tangari believes “her record reflects that she has been and will continue to be in sync with the values that are core to the social work profession.”

Arizona Effort Saves Program
Social work advocates celebrated a victory in May to keep a school of social work program alive at Arizona State University’s Tucson campus, with NASW’s Arizona Chapter leading the effort.

Guam Chapter Marks 10th Anniversary
NASW’s Guam Chapter celebrates 10 years since its inception. Since then, the chapter has seen an increase in student membership and successful fundraising and scholarship efforts, and looks toward promoting social work reinvestment efforts through a licensure process for Guam.

VOLUNTEER OUTREACH

Answer President Obama’s Call to Action: “United We Serve”

Create meaningful change in your community by participating in President Obama’s “United We Serve” summer service initiative, which runs June 22 - September 11, 2009. The President’s four key areas of community change are education, health, energy and the environment, and community renewal. Identify the needs in your community, plan and participate in meaningful service, and stay with it long after September. The NASW Code of Ethics encourages volunteer service, and this initiative is an effective way to get involved in your community.

Watch President Obama’s “United We Serve” video message here. Create new service projects, find community service projects, and tell what projects are making a difference at www.serve.gov. Many of you already provide much-needed community service, especially through the national Give an Hour volunteer program and the Red Cross. Write about it on www.serve.gov.
