LEGISLATIVE AND LEGAL ADVOCACY
Is Our Safety Net Strong Enough?
SWRI LogoSerious on-the-job safety concerns, significant educational debt, and comparatively insufficient salaries hamper our ability to provide indispensible social work services. The Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act, H.R. 795 and S. 686, is addressing “on the ground” realities we now face and protects our ability to provide essential services well into the future. Click here to learn what you can do from home or work to support this crucial legislation.

Upcoming June NASW NEWS
Look for these articles in the June 2009 issue, available soon at NASW NEWS online.
Encyclopedia of Social Work From the President: Leaders and Lessons to Guide Us
By James J. Kelly
As we move forward in seeking solutions in the face of difficult work and shrinking budgets, many of us are looking to our past for answers. Luckily for social workers, our past is full of historical leaders, including Frances Perkins and Harry Hopkins.

NASW Helps Influence Legal Decisions
NASW works to influence public policy through a number of means, including legal advocacy in the federal and state courts, primarily with the support of the NASW Legal Defense Fund (LDF) by filing amicus curiae briefs in cases of significance to the social work profession or to social workers’ clients.

LGBTQ Training Moves Ahead
A project training social workers and other child welfare professionals on ways to serve out-of-home lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth effectively reached its goal in March.

Chapters Celebrate Profession
Many NASW chapters celebrated National Professional Social Work Month—March—in their own ways, including California, Puerto Rico, Illinois, Georgia, West Virginia, and others.
