Carol Sheets, MSW, LICSW, ACSW, serves as National Director of Social Work within Care Management and Social Work Service, Office of Patient Care Services, in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).  There she develops policy on the provision of social work services in VA health care facilities and offers guidance and consultation on the professional practice of social work to VA Central Office and the field.  Ms. Sheets advocates for and supports over 9,000 master’s prepared social workers assigned to 152 medical centers, 974 outpatient clinics, and 133 community living centers.  VA is the single largest employer of professional social workers. Ms. Sheets has responsibility for training graduate social work students and offers more than 900 field placements every year.  Ms. Sheets has brought national recognition to the VA as a leader in the provision of social work services in health care. 

Ms. Sheets’ social work career has focused on assuring comprehensive health care for Veterans, including psychosocial and case management service provision.  Under her transformational leadership, Ms. Sheets established a stellar VA Social Work Leadership Training to strengthen current social work leaders and to promote career planning for emerging social work leaders. Ms. Sheets’ VA career has included serving as a social work intern, medical social worker, social work supervisor, community services coordinator, spinal cord injury coordinator, and numerous clinical and administrative assignments.

She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the District of Columbia and is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, as well as the Academy of Certified Social Workers. She received her MSW from Western Michigan University.
