Assistant Professor
University of Connecticut School of Social Work

S. Megan Berthold, PhD, LCSW, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut’s School of Social Work. Issues of diversity, human rights, and social justice are central to Dr. Berthold’s career focus. She has worked with diverse refugee and asylum seeking survivors of torture, war traumas, human trafficking, female genital mutilation, and other traumas for the past 24 years. She was a clinician and educator in refugee camps in Nepal, the Philippines, and on the Thai-Cambodian border. Dr. Berthold conducts federally funded clinical outcomes research with torture survivors through a National Institute of Mental Health funded research program. The research examines the prevalence of torture and its mental and physical health consequences among Cambodian refugees. She frequently testifies as an expert witness in U.S. Immigration Court and has trained numerous social workers and other professionals about vicarious trauma, resilience, and self-care.

She has published twelve journal articles, three book chapters, and one book. This co-authored book was the winner of the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights in North America Outstanding Book Award in 2000. In 2009, Dr. Berthold was recognized as the Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers.

Dr. Berthold earned an MSW with a concentration in clinical social work, health, and mental health from the University of Utah and a PhD in social welfare from the University of California.
