Authorization and Accountability

The Publications Committee is authorized by and accountable to the NASW Board of Directors.  It offers recommendations to the Board of Directors in the development and implementation of an association-wide publications program.

Purpose

The Publications Committee maintains a comprehensive and integrated view of NASW's publications programs.  Providing general oversight of the publications program on behalf of the Board of Directors, the committee makes recommendations on all programs related to the NASW Press, publishing and general communications at NASW.

Members, Terms and Criteria

The Publications Committee includes the following members: a chairperson, 1 Board of Directors liaison, the editor-in-chief of Social Work, the editor-in-chief of Social Work Research, the editor-in-chief of Health and Social Work, the editor-in-chief of Children and Schools, and the chair of the Book Committee.

President shall appoint the chair and all members of the committee.  The Chair shall serve for four years and the Board liaison for the length of the board term.  The editors-in-chief and chair of the Book Committee shall serve for the length of their appointment to the editorial boards or Book Committee.

Members of the Publications Committee must have substantial publishing experience and must have served on peer review committees, either for NASW Press publications or for other scholarly publications.  Committee members must be NASW members in good standing.  Experience with non-print media, trade publications, or market research is beneficial.

Specific Responsibilities
  1. Consider and recommend policy related to publications.
  2. Provide oversight for and consider policy related to the publication of scholarly journals (including Social Work, Social Work Research, Health & Social Work, and Children and Schools), scholarly books, reference works, practice tools, software, databases, newspapers, and other association publications.
  3. Review objectives for the publications program and recommend priorities to the Board of Directors.
  4. Analyze the publications needs of the organization and the profession and project future trends.
  5. Review and recommend market research that will assist in positioning the association as the primary source of information and products related to social services.
  6. Review and recommend use of new publications technology.
  7. Provide oversight for and consider policy related to the Encyclopedia of Social Work.
