Book Committee

Authorization and Accountability

The NASW Board of Directors approved the formation of a Book Committee in June 1996. The Book Committee is responsible to the Publications Committee, which reports to the Board of Directors.

Purpose

The book program of the NASW Press was established to advance social work knowledge and to support the program of the association. The Book Committee promotes the acquisition of high-quality manuscripts and develops and recommends policies related to content in order to maintain and expand the program as a competitive press.

Time Frame

The Book Committee activities are ongoing.

Members, Terms, and Criteria

The Book Committee is composed of 8 members: Chair and 7 members, serving three-year terms. The Chair of the Book Committee serves as a regular member of the Publications Committee, and the Chair of the Publications Committee is an ex-officio member of the Book Committee. Members of the Book Committee must have extensive publishing experience, as well as experience in peer review. The Book Committee meets once each year.

Specific Responsibilities

Encourage authors who produce high-quality work that offers utility for social work practice and social work education to submit manuscripts to the press.
Promote the book program among colleagues and students.
Analyze trends and needs within the profession and seek out manuscripts to meet the needs.
Read and rate book proposals and manuscripts.
Develop and recommend changes in policies related to content to ensure that the NASW Press remains competitive with other publishers.
Work with manuscript advisors and external reviewers as necessary.
