Calling Your Member of Congress
A phone call is a quick and effective way of letting members of Congress know
your position on an issue. When legislators get several phone calls from
constituents on issues or legislation, they begin to pay more attention. When
making a phone call to the office of your member of Congress be sure to include
the following information.
- Who you are. Let the legislator’s office know that you are a
constituent, a social worker, and a member of the National Association of Social
Workers.
- The issue and your position on it. Give your position on an issue or
piece of legislation. If you would like for the legislator to co-sponsor a piece
of legislation let them know that. If it is a piece of legislation that is
pending, make sure you are clear on what legislation it is. For example, you can
let them know the bill number (H.R. 111) as well as the name of the bill.
Sometimes several pieces of similar legislation are pending at the same time.
- How to contact you. Remember to leave your address and telephone
number so that you can receive a response from your member of Congress.
