Support Enhanced Hate Crime Legislation
Background
Congress is currently considering an important legislative proposal that would help states find and prosecute perpetrators of hate crimes.
The Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007 (S.1105), introduced by Senator Kennedy (D-MA), authorizes the Attorney General to provide technical, forensic, prosecutorial, or other assistance for any crime of violence committed with prejudice against the victim on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.
This legislation also directs the Office of Justice Programs to ensure that all affected parties’ concerns and needs are addressed. In addition, awards are granted to state, local or tribal programs designed to combat hate crimes committed by juveniles. Finally, this bill requires the Attorney General to acquire data on crimes that manifest evidence of prejudice based on gender and gender identity and include an annual summary of such data crimes committed by and against juveniles.
One core mission of social work is to serve underrepresented and marginalized communities. For this reason, social workers are profoundly committed to advocating for a humane society that will resolve to fight intolerance, bigotry, and injustice against all people. The Hate Crimes Act represents Congress’ desire to move towards this goal. S.1105 requires bipartisan support and significant external advocacy.

Please call your Senators at 202-224-3121 and urge them to support S.1105, The Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007 (or the Hate Crimes Act).
